#364 "Dan Gurney and Phil Hill"Monaco Grand Prix 1962. Dan Gurney already drives the 804 Porsche and achieves the third place on the grid. Phil Hill, displayed here ahead of Gurney in the Ferrari 156, later will finish 2nd. Bruce McLaren on his Cooper, displayed in front here, will be the winner. It was the only season for the beautiful Porsche 804 Formula One car. Joakim Bonnier still drove the Porsche 718 with his swedish colours in that race, but managed to get on a fifth place after a start from nearly the back of the field. Dan Gurney unfortunately abandonned before the end of the race. The scene shows the three cars from a rare point of view – while Gurney and Hill are still breaking for the Casino corner. The Original is on display at Retromobile Paris, 1st to 5th of February 2012. Uli´s stand is in hall 3, section J, stand 103 (behind the Fiskens stand). |
#362 "BRM P57" Graham Hill, Monaco GP 1963Graham Hill is the king of Formula 1 concerning the winners list at Monaco. Here we see him in his beautiful BRM P57 just trying to take virage Noghes. A tricky and very narrow right hander after Rascasse, where it was even in those days obvious that there was too much F1 power available for this low speed corner. So Graham drifts by with wheel spin, whirling up the sand and dust to cover the oil from a competitors broken engine. He won this Grand Prix just 4.6 seconds ahead of team partner Richie Ginther and 12.8 in front of Bruce McLaren in a Cooper Climax. Also 100 laps completed John Surtees in his Ferrari 156, who had started 3rd from the grid but lost this place to McLaren. Hill had started second to Clark from the grid, but the Lotus 25 had a gearbox problem, so Hill took victory this time again. It was the first Grand Prix of the 1963 season. Great times! Original and prints available |
#361 "Conquering Monza" John Surtees, Honda RA300What a sculpture of a race car. Mind the black exhaust system hidden behind the driver to improve the aerodynamics. John Surtees keeps his Honda RA300 in the lead at the Italian Grand Prix 1967 - just inches ahead of the Brabham-Repco of Jack Brabham. To win Monza you had to have the chance and knowledge to win a slipstream duel. Like Jackies Stewart two years later or Peter Gethin in 1971. It was not only the reliabilty, power and aerodynamics of the car, which surely founded a Monza victory, but also the cleverness and a little chance to get ahead of the leading cars while and after the last time you took the Parabolica. Clark had lead the Monza GP 1967 two times, but a tyre puncture near the half and a faulty fuel pump did the rest to his second lead after having faught back through the field. So it was Surtees and Brabham fighting for the victory - and John Surtees just went over the finish line 0,2 secs ahead of the Australian. You had to have a lot of courage to ride such a fuel bomb and keep the nerves to always decide right I guess. But Surtees had the necessary characteristics - to conquer Monza 1967. #359 "Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 at Targa Florio 1931"A commission painting for the owner of this car. It shows this historic Alfa race car just coming down from Futa Pass. The april event (nowadays in may) passed the 903 m high pass usually. Drivers like Nuvolari raced this 6C to many victories in Italy and Europe. Reproductions available. |
#357 "Stirling Moss at Targa Florio 1961"At Le Mans 2011 I was introduced by Andy Prill to Sir Stirling Moss. A wonderful moment as you can guess. So to round up this wonderful moment and to honour Stirlings very last lap in a race car, I painted this Targa Florio scene. It shows exactly the Porsche 718 RS 61 which he drove at Targa Florio in 1961 but also at this years Le mans 24 hours historic race, just a few hours before the "real" race with the 2011 LMP1s and GTEs. This last drive finished a magic motorsport carreer behind the wheel. A lovely memory for all Stirling Moss fans ! Original sold. Sorry ! Reproductions are available in all sizes named here on this website, but of course limited to an edition run of 500 prints only.

#356 "GT Master 2011" Alpina BMW B6In November I was asked by Alpina BMW to create a painting as a gift for all those involved in the B6s victory in the German GT Masters series. A great commission again of course, and a real honour. Alpina is a big name, not only in Germany, with all its great motorsport history. The painting shows the victory at Assen in April 2011. Congratulations to the team, the drivers, the men and women behind this success ! I hope this painting keeps the memory alive of a fantastic achievement against mighty opposition. |
#355 "John Lennon"It is something very different to what you saw from me and my art work so far. But after I felt more sure to paint people, portraits and faces the last months, I decided to say yes, when I was asked in july at Goodwood if I would take this commission. It was a lovely idea, to show John Lennon and his car. The idea to have the New York house in the background, where he lived with Yoko, fits perfectly to the car livery - I think. First I thought about John Lennon behind the car, but his personality is just too big to just show him behind the Rolls Royce of course. I found a book and fotos that helped me to charge his size and dimensions in relationship to the car, but I created the way he stands and "moves" my self. Now it paid, that I had bought some books about John and the Beatles the last few years. The fotos helped me to create how I think he really looked. It was a real challenge to paint him, but not copy any ones foto e.g. The psychedelic design of the Rolls Royce is just great. It is strange at first, but it fits to the car in a way - and of course to the fact, that John wanted to change the usual image of this car to something unique. The original is sold, but the print in 90 x 120 cm is just great - and available. |
#341 "TVR Grantura at Le Mans Classic"A commission for the owner(s) of this wonderful TVR Grantura. Followed by a Ford GT 40 and chasing an E-Type, the scene shows a typical race scene of the Le Mans Classic event. A "Golden Moment" for everybody involved in this TVR race team and may be many others, who just admire the atmosphere and feeling of the Le Mans Classic event. Prints available. |
#358 "Aston Martin ahead"In September for the 1000 kms race at Silverstone I was invited by Aston Martin and Pro Drive to paint live at their VIP lounge in the Brooklands suites. It was a very nice and very exciting two and a half days with Simon Sanderson and Guylaine Moreau from Aston Martin. I met Sponsors and fellow workers, the head of the management and many Aston Martin enthusiasts visited the race and talked a while to me, while I painted there. I never had a better view while using my water colours. The view from the suites down onto the Wellington straight and over to the SRC club was just marvellous. When some of the fire spitting V8s or V12s thundered by at the glass front of our VIP suite, it was hard to decide to look or to paint. But I managed to paint this trio of a DB4 GT, DB3S and DB 2 during the two days at Silverstone. Fantastic to have my friends Jane & Geoff Doughty with me there - thanks to Guylaine Moreau again. Also thanks a lot to Ian Drake from Ultimate Racing and Caroline Sloan for the wonderful help and great atmosphere in their suites. It was a fantastic weekend ! Please have a look at the fotos, just click "Aston Martin" here on my website. The original of this painting is already sold. But reproductions are now available. |

#348 "Against all Odds" Audi R18 Le Mans 24 h winner 2011What a fantastic race at Le Mans this year ! Marcel Fässler, Benoit Tréluyer and André Lotterer finally won the fight against three lions during the "longest night of the year". The painting shows the Peugeot 908 HDI FAP and the Audi R18 TDI flying down to the Esses followed by another Peugeot, just under the Dunlop bridge. It was more than dramatic, and a race decided by only 16 seconds after 24 hours is worth a memorable place in history. Congratulations to Marcel, Benoit and André for this great achievement ! The original is already sold. Reproductions available in all sizes - it looks fantastic in 50 x 100 cm and 180 x 100 cm on canvas. Have a look at them in my gallery - open Mo.-Fr. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Satruday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (each saturday until the 17th of December) . |
#352 Audi Typ P "Der Weihnachtsgast"The rarest Audi is a Type P from 1931. Just restored from Audi Tradition. It is the latest idea for a new christmas card called "Der Weihnachtsgast", which means the "Christmas visitor". Original available. Reproductions and Christmas Cards too. |
#350 "Porsche 917K"Kurt Ahrens and Jo Siffert drove this "widdow maker" Porsche 917 short tail in the psychedelic livery to a fantastic second place at Kyalami / South Africa in 1970. It was a commission painting for Shell. Original sold. Sorry ! Reproductions available. Funny enough there was a real Shell gas station next to the track which is partly shown on the right of the painting. Good for my partners from Shell - thanks for the wonderful commission ! |
#345 "Julien Jousse"Some people know I am a huge Francois Cevert fan. With Julien Jousses father Luc, commissioning me to paint his son and the Pescarolo LMP 1 at a Le Mans pit stop I could not bet. Nor could i know he uses the same helmet colours as Francois Cevert to honour the french Tyrrell driver of the early 70s. But he was more than just the number two behind Stewart. Everybody believed in him as the world champion in F1 for 1974 after Jackie would have retired. It came different we know. Original sold - reproductions in all sizes available. |
#349 "The Good Old Times"Do you remember the good old times, when a station wasn´t only a station, but a pub with your best friends plus help if you needed it for your car? The owner of the station normally also loved cars and engines, that was why he worked on this job. His wife sat behind the counter and offered you coffee, often enough with cakes from the local bakery. The latest car magazine was on display, some presents like a "Schuco" metal model – the english equivalent must have been Corgys and Matchbox I guess – were there to purchase them for a reasonable price, plus the usual "sunday tax" of the garagist. The whole room smelled something like coffee, caramel and grease. But if your car did not work on a cold sunday afternoon, this was heaven. The last years i had the great luck to have a garagist just near my house to guard and maintain my old Alfa Spider. His name Toni and his very italian character describe how lovely this place was - and how deserted it is now without him - since he quit. Even my wife loved to go there, as she did not only get her car maintained, but also this one meter sixty of italian charme took all the fears she had. So put all these emotions together in one painting - and here it is - my favourite place on a cold sunday evening, when its time to realize the weekend is over and you need a last smile or car mag to get this monday morning fears out of the head before you go to sleep. |
#342 "One moment in time" Greaves Motorsport Nissan Zytek, LMP2 winner at Le Mans 2011This water colour painting was a commission by team Greaves Motorsport. It shows their Nissan Zytek car just passing the finish line with the team members waving flags and celebrating this fantastic moment in time. After several victories in the Le mans series this year, the Grand Prix d´Endurance win surely was the highlight of the teams´, drivers´ and mechanics´ carreers so far. We all can feel that this moment must have been emotional and overwhelming. Well done ! |
#347 "Gran Turisme"Bugatti Atalante T57 and Armstrong Siddeley Argosy meet on a lonely motorway somewhere between London and Paris. The plane used to transport passengers over the Channel each day. You can see the passengers through the windows of the body of this trimotor plane. The pilot of the Imperial Airways machine sits just on top in front. He raises his arm for the enthusiastically greeting driver of the Bugatti. Just as we would do it, if we would meet a sensational air plane, from our sensational Bugatti in 1937 on a snowy road, may be in the area of Baie de la Somme, where the french and english elegance met, when travelling from France to England or back. |
#346 "Larbre Competition Porsche 911 GT-AM - Le Mans 2011"A lovely example of Porsches 911s, entering the 24 hours of Le Mans since decades. The Larbre Competition Porsche #70 drove to a second place in the GT-AM category in this years Le Mans Grand Prix d´Endurance. The painting was a commission for the team. |
#344 "Jo & Ronnie"This is a new idea for a christmas card and it will be printed the next weeks. It shows Joakim Bonnier in a Cooper F1 just cornering this forgotten race track at Sweden, following his friend Ronnie Peterson. That is a new fairy tale. It goes like this: God allows the two angels to come back to the swedish race track every Christmas afternoon, when all other good swedes are in church, so Jo and Ronnie cannot be seen and heard. God allows the two race heroes only a 24 laps race each year on their beloved snowy ground. Ronnie used the Ferrari 312 in this years christmas race, that god just lent for that hour from a rich american collector, who did not even realize it, but only he wondered where these puddles water in his garage came from. Ronnie forgot to clean the snow from the tyres. It is not mentioned in the fairy tale who won the race, but I wonder how they got their wings belted up. |
#337 "The Le Mans Scrapyard" "La Casse des voitures du course du Mans"You won´t find this scrapyard at Le Mans, but if you believe in fairy tales, this one would be great: "The Monday after the race, the marshals from poste 70 add more to their collection." Tu ne verait pas trouver cette casse, mais si tu aime des contes – la voilà: "Le lundi après le circuit, la collection des fonctionnaires du poste 70 grandit encore." On trouve presque 25 voitures des 24 heures du Mans sur cette peinture. |
